Professional Work Experience Program

Duration: 4 weeks of part-time course work and 12 week work experience placement

Course Outline

The program comprises of a 4 week workplace preparation course (approx. 6 hours per week) followed by a 12 week work experience placement. Upon completion participants will be awarded a certificate and have gained invaluable work experience with a reputable Australian organisation. The program length can be tailored to individual needs, however the standard duration is 12 weeks (part -time)  for an effective workplace experience.

Workplace Preparation Course
Don’t expect just another series of University style workshops. You can expect to be challenged and to work hard on what’s important to your future career.

The workplace preparation course is part-time (approx. 6 hours per week) and will be delivered in workshop style block mode in small groups at times to suit participants.  Participants will also be expected to undertake some on-line study tasks. Participants will be expected to dress and act professionally.  Some food and drink will be provided at the workshops.

The workplace preparation course is structured as follows:

  • One on one discussions with a Career Advisor who will closely follow your progress throughout the course
  • Workshops with CEO’s from prominent businesses and government agencies on employer expectations, needs and prejudices
  • Workshops on the ‘work readiness skills’ identified by industry
  • Workshops to improve participant’s CV’s, interview technique and application letters

Work Experience Placement
Work Experience Placements in your chosen profession are being accessed with the assistance of career networking professionals.

Your Career Advisor will assist you to identify career goals and tailor your work experience placement to best suit your needs in the industry of your choice. A Placement Host Organisation will then be selected and you will be assisted to establish a training plan with your Placement Host Organisation to ensure that the placement fits your skill needs. Your Career Advisor will be in regular contact to support you during your placement and you will share your progress and experiences with other members of the program in on-line discussions.

Work experience placements are unpaid and will be generally of 12 weeks duration (full-time or part-time). However adjustments may be made to the duration of the placement on agreement between the participant, the host organisation and The William Light Institute Career Advisor.

Course Objectives

Get up to date industry skills, knowledge and hands on experience.

Get the benefit of a career advisor, access to Chief Executives of major organisations, and help to sharpen your CV and interview technique.

The Professional Work Experience Program consists of:

  • 4 weeks of part-time course work on employability skills
  • 12 week work experience placement on a project or service that fits with your professional needs (part-time or full-time)

The William Light Institute Professional Work Experience Program is a 16 week (part-time) non-award course designed for graduates those looking to increase their understanding of the skills needed by professionals in the Australian workforce and also seeking some practical experience of working in a professional environment. Participants will have access to industry leaders and career advisors and a practical work experience placement in their chosen field. The program adds value to participant’s CV’s and should enhance their career prospects through the knowledge and confidence gained by a hands-on experience in the workforce. 

Entry Requirements

  • An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in any discipline
  • Good oral and written English communication skills
  • Pass an interview after your application has been assessed

Step 1: Download and complete the WLI Graduate Internship Application Form (Word filePDF file)

Step 2: Attach the following required documents:

  • Certified Academic transcripts and other qualification documents
  • CV
  • Copy of visa and passport (or medicare, drivers licence - 100 points test)
  • National Police Clearance

Step 4: Your application will be assessed and we will contact you for the result of your application. If successful, you will be contacted to attend an interview.

Step 5: If your interview is successful, you will be asked to pay the first installment of fees.
